I have read a lot of views, findings, opinions on the much watched household, internet gripping entertainment fantasy reality show in Nigeria. They all are much ado about nothing, but a case of the good, the bad and the ugly all in the same melting pot of a failed society without new media curriculum in their Education system.
Theoretical the so much dependency of our youths, minors, teneagers and many more on this reality show is because it satisfies a media need, (escape from the world when tension is high[fantasy escape]) no more than the epistle so far written.
This is but one of the three needs that new media is meant to meet in our lives amongst; need to act meaningful and effectively in a society (social utility).
Who determins this media need . . The government. the school and the family
When people have limited time , attention and participation in one activity, it take away participation in others. Thus one activity can displace the other. Its a matter of who getst here first. Viewership and readership of a particular outlet can lead to reduction in the amount of time spent on another with little or no influence, if and only if such meet the viewers need at that point in time. This explains why they do not have data, network, or battery to engage themselves in any online learning platform even though its their basic need; but BB Nija exclusive and its likes.
The Government who determine the need of its citizens.
should introduce new media education for them to be used for educational purposes than for entertainment. If government had upheld new media curriculum in education; start early to allow teaching and learning with new media in school. we would be rest assured that media need for educational purposes will definitely displace media need for entertainment before our children get of age and not wink an eye less waste breath on such passing program like BBnija.
The School Why would a teacher and school clamp down on new media use in classroom. Why ask a child to remove the device in his hand when he can use it to enhance learning. He is asked to put it away to jot on a paper that would not later see the light of the day, when he could record same to replay later. Let school enforce new media need to social utility early in life to displace need for entertainment before they grow up
At home do not take that device away from that child anymore but define the need to be met with the devices as soon as the child is born.. depending on your family values. The line can be drawn so that the level of dependency on new media for entertainment fantasy will be displaced by media need for social utility.
